Don't Just Throw You Wine Rack On The Counter!

A counter top wine rack is a perfect solution for wine enthusiasts (or wine enthusiasts at heart) looking for a short term storage solution for smaller quantities of wine. Not only are they stylish, but they are also available in so many varieties of styles, materials and capacities that there is a counter top wine rack to fit the personal tastes of almost anyone. What most people don?t understand, however is that using a counter top wine rack is not as simple as placing it on a counter and filling it with bottles of wine. If your wine is going to be consumed quickly this might be ok, but if you are looking to store a bottle of wine for even more than a couple of weeks there are a few things which should be kept in mind to help keep your wine tasting it?s best when you pop the cork.

  • Temperature: A wine rack should never be placed where it is going to be in close contact with extreme heat, whether it is a counter top wine rack, floor standing or wall mounted. Never place a wine rack near a heater, stove, oven or other appliance that generates heat. Wine that becomes too hot can ?cook? and degrades the wine. On the contrary, some wines should never be store in extreme cold either. For example, a wine rack storing red wine should never be stored near cold drafts.
  • Sunlight: can also affect the aging process. It is important to keep wines out of direct sunlight, which is one reason many wines, especially reds, are distributed in tinted bottles. As such, white wines are usually the most susceptible to sunlight. Even though UV rays can still affect and if left long enough ruin, a bottle of wine, if your are using a counter top wine rack for short term storage of wine just keeping the bottles out of direct sunlight will be sufficient.
  • Vibration: If storing wines for any length of time it is best to put it in a place where large heavy vibrations will not be occurring. For example in my kitchen I have an under counter washing machine/dryer which tends to vibrate and shake quite a bit when in the spin cycle. It would be unwise of me to put a counter top wine rack on that counter because the vibration from the washing machine would cause the wine to become shaken up and disturb the sediment.

Keeping these three simple factors in mind might initially make it a little more difficult to find the perfect place to put your counter top wine rack, but you will thank yourself for it when you open your first bottle of wine and it tastes perfect!

Finest Wine Racks is a major supplier of a variety of wine racks including wood wine racks, metal wine racks, counter top, floor standing wine racks and wine storage systems.

Wine Kits For Your Reading Pleasure

Cool Trick For Red Wine Removal

Here is a simple and effective way to remove red wine from your carpet. The biggest mistake most people make when trying to remove a spill from their carpet is rubbing on the spot with a rag or paper towel. Rubbing any spot or spill will only push the spill further down into the carpet and may actually penetrate the fiber itself, getting into the dye site. This is very bad, especially if the carpet is nylon, which the majority of carpet in residential homes are.

Red wine can be even trickier because it naturally contains dye. Even blotting the stain like you should, does not always remove red wine. So what is a good way to remove red wine? Next time you have a red wine spill, cover the spot with corn starch and push it down in the carpet with your hand or foot to make sure it is all the way down to the bottom of the carpet.

Wait for a day or so and then vacuum the corn starch away. Most of the time, this method removes all of the red wine without causing a permanent stain on the carpet. If you are ever in doubt on how to remove any spot or spill from your carpet, refer to the manufacturers instructions. If you are not sure who that is, call the business that sold you the carpet or look on your receipt.

Important Note: Make sure you give the corn starch at least 24 hours to work before you vacuum it away.

I Love Italian Wine and Food - The Veneto Region

If you are looking for fine Italian wine and food, consider the Veneto region of northern Italy. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you?ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour.

Veneto is located in northeastern Italy on the Gulf of Venice. The region is mountainous with all kinds of water; rivers, lakes, lagoons, and of course, canals. In its heyday, during the Renaissance (Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries), the Venetian Republic ruled a large part of northern Italy, and was a major player in the world of commerce and culture. Veneto?s present population is about 4.5 million.

Veneto?s capital, Venice, is one of the world?s top tourist destinations, claiming 60 million visitors a year. Its attractions are too numerous to list here. Venice?s neighbor, Padua, is the oldest city in northern Italy. Padua was the home of the famous astronomer Gallileo Gallilei. The metropolitan region encompassing these two cities has over 1.6 million people. Another city of interest is Verona with its numerous Roman and medieval monuments.

Agricultural products include cattle, corn, wheat, sugar beets, and of course grapes. With all the water you can be sure that fish and seafood abound. Rice is more important than pasta, and lovers of sweets will not be disappointed. Industries include textiles, silk, shipbuilding, and sugar refining, but the major industry remains tourism.

Veneto devotes almost 250 thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 3rd among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is almost 180 million gallons, also giving it a 3rd place. About 45% of the wine production is red or ros?, leaving 55% for white. The region produces 24 DOC wines and 3 DOCG wines, Recioto di Soave, Soave Superiore, and Bardolino Superiore. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. Almost 30% of Venetian wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation. Veneto is home to about four dozen major and secondary grape varieties, approximately half white and half red.

Widely grown international white grape varieties include Trebbiano, Chardonnay, and Pinot Bianco, known as Pinot Blanc outside of Italy. The best-known strictly Italian white varieties are Garganega and Prosecco.

Widely grown international red grape varieties include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The best-known strictly Italian red varieties are Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara.

Before we reviewing the Veneto wine and cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wine when touring this beautiful region.

Start with Pasta e Fasioli; Pasta and Bean Soup.

Then try Risotto de Scampi; Scampi Risotto.

For dessert indulge yourself with Torta de Paparele; Lemon Tagliatelle Cake.

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY While we have communicated with well over a thousand Italian wine producers and merchants to help prepare these articles, our policy is clear. All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Corte Gardoni Bianco di Custoza DOC 2004 12.5% alcohol about $8

I?ll start with the marketing materials. ?Floral notes mixed with sweet red Delicious apple and Bosc pear aromatics form the inviting and lifted nose. The flavors are quite different with citrus and green apples coming to the fore. It is light to medium-bodied, providing a tangy finish that would pair well with grilled, firm (tuna or sword) fish.? And now for my thoughts.

This wine was first paired to a commercial chicken pot pie with a bit of chili-lime hot sauce. I tasted some apple. It was quite weak at first, but did pick up some strength from sip to sip.

The next meal was more in line with the marketing suggestions, namely grilled salmon filet with oven-baked potato patties and French fries. While there was some apple taste, essentially the wine didn?t add anything to the meal. However, it went well with dessert, thin biscuits containing almonds and pistachios.

My next trial included chicken legs in a soy and onion sauce with rice and green beans. The wine was not unpleasant but was light and fleeting.

Montasio cheese is a specialty of the Veneto region. It is made from cow?s milk and can have a sharp flavor when it ages. I was happy when the wine was able to handle this strong cheese. It didn?t do as well with an Asiago cheese, also from the Veneto area.

Final verdict, I won?t be buying this wine again, even at its relatively low price.

Swedish Christmas Recipe for Mulled Wine or Glogg

What would Christmas be like without the traditional mulled wine? The wonderful aromas wafting through the house during the holiday season have even sparked scented candles designed to conjure up our favorite smell!

Every country has it's version of this holiday recipe - from the German Gluhwein to the Italian Vin Brul?.

Here is a great and tasty of how the Swedes have incorporated the enticing flavors of tropical spices. In gl?gg the liquids are steeped with various spices. What better way to keep spirits high when the sun disappears for months? A Christmas gathering with no gl?gg is unthinkable in Sweden, akin to a Superbowl party with no beer.

Mulled Wine or Gl?gg

Put all of the ingredients in a stainless steel pan and slowly heat.
Do not boil.
Strain and drink immediately.
For a more intense flavor, let spices steep for several hours or overnight; strain and gently reheat.

Serve in a heat proof bowl, with mugs or glasses and a large ladel. Enjoy welcoming in Christmas with this traditional Swedish beverage!

Frisee Restaurant (3/5) on Yelp.com

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 19:51:50 PDT
Frisee Restaurant Categories: American (New), Breakfast & Brunch Neighborhood: Castro Frisee was good, but didn't quite live up to the hype for me. 3.5 stars. Seating had something to do with it - we were seated up on the 2nd floor balcony of this small and lean restaurant (think "loft" seating) - which made me have vertigo until I had neared the bottom of my wine glass. Cool view of the kitchen, though. The service was great, and our waiter gave us very good recommendations.
