Direct Mail Marketing and Wine Labels - What's Your Big Idea?

Not long ago, I read that well-known California winemaker Rodney Strong had passed away. While recounting his professional career, the article cited Strong's innovative direct mail marketing tactics.

An excerpt:

"Strong developed a marketing strategy that involved direct mail in which he offered to sell wine with a buyer's individual information on the label - 'From the wine cellar of so-and-so,' or 'A gift from such-and-such corporation'."

The program continues to this day, as living testament to its effectiveness.

That story got me thinking about the way we market our products and services in relation to their uniqueness.

For instance:

Why do so many companies today waste time and money marketing average products and services to hard-to-impress consumers? Why don't more companies follow the Rodney Strong model (remarkable product / service idea first; marketing second)?

Marketing the Remarkable

Rodney Strong took something simple but interesting -- personalized wine labels -- and made it available to his audience. Why was it so popular? Because nobody else was doing it at the time. Rodney gambled on an idea, and it worked. He made something that was remarkable to his customers. Then, all he had left to do was tell them about it (in this case through direct mail), and they asked for it by the thousands!

Here's the idea again:

Come up with a remarkable product or service, and then start telling people about it. Word-of-mouth will take it from there.

How Do You Measure Up?

If you struggle when creating your direct mail message, it might indicate that your product or service could use a shot of "the old remarkable."

Or think of it this way...

If you stripped away all the marketing glitz and set your product on a shelf by itself (or described your service on a plain piece of paper) -- would it seem remarkable? Would it impress members of your target audience? Or, are you relying on your marketing to add the pizzazz?

Instead of struggling to promote something average, dig deep to find the above-average aspect of what you're selling. If there isn't such an aspect ... go back to the drawing board and make one.

Free Trade is always something good, even for wine drinkers. At least, that's what The Economist says on its Free Exchange economics blog, pointing to a study by the Journal of Wine Economics. "We find that there is an overall decrease in the real price of a shopping cart of all 100 wines from year to year," the study says.

Metal Wine Rack -- Beauty and Function Unite

Metal wine racks are designed and structured for the display and storage of unopened wine bottles, and come in a variety of style and functions. These racks can sit on the floor, hang from the ceiling, revolve or remain stationary, sit on the table-top as centerpieces, or be situated on the wall as shelving or cabinet storage. Metal wine racks serve as ornamental features as well as convenient beverage holders.

Some examples of floor metal wine racks are the square eight-corner wine rack, the wine tree with ten-bottle branches, and the festival wine rack. The first can be positioned anywhere in the house and features potted plants, figurines, pedestal candles, dried flowers, or even hold towels in the kitchen or bathroom.

The ten spiral branches of the Wine Tree, on the other hand, add flare to any scene. Its wooden stand allows for placement on shelves, countertops, or tables. Alternatively, the Festival Rack boasts convenience. This particular metal wine rack can be disassembled and placed on or between lawn chairs or situated in the sand. It even holds wine glasses along with the wine bottle.

The hanging metal wine racks have multitude of purposes. The Hanging Six-Bottle Wine Rack has an optional stem to accommodate an extra two bottles and decorative spirals. This can be situated over countertops, bars, or tables, and is installed with little or no effort whatsoever. The Hanging Eclectic Eight-Bottle Metal Wine Rack has an erratic design that adds flash to the environment, and comes with an eighteen-inch black chain. No two of this kind of rack are made the same, so each one is one-of-a-kind!

Revolving metal wine racks can be designed to run from floor to ceiling, serve as a room divider, and can hold up to forty bottles. These metal wine racks can be supported at the top, at the bottom, or both, and can be placed in the corner, against the wall, or wherever. Their revolving feature provides convenience and the visual stimulation of a Christmas tree. It therefore serves dual-function-wine storage and movable dcor!

Table-top metal wine racks are available in single-, double-, triple-, and quad-bottle accommodation. The Breather Wine Rack is situated at a tilt to allow uncorked wine to breath (hence the name), and allows a nice display. Neck Spiraled Metal Wine Racks-for single- and double-bottle accommodations-serve as excellent centerpieces.

Wall and cabinet metal wine racks come in Slanted Wall Mounts and Under-Cabinet Mounts, respectively. The former are assembled for sheetrock walls and have no studs, and are found in three-, four-, five-, and six-bottle accommodations. The latter can be turned and hung on wall or under cabinets, out of the way. These metal wine racks provide three functions: wine storage, visual dcor, and open work space facilitation!

Metal wine racks come in an endless array of possibilities, depending on personal choice and necessity. The stylish and sturdy construction of the metal wine racks allow years of use and enjoyment. Wine lovers find these appealing and fairly priced regardless of the choice of rack.

Metal wine racks can benefit any house and wine storage facility. Visit our site today for recommendations on great wine racks.

Nieder Florsheimer Burg Rodenstein Spaetlese Anniversary Edition

A fine wine of Rudolf Geil. The 1991 Nieder-Florsheimer Seigerrebe / Huxelrebe Spaetlese was the first wine we offered from Rudolf and with the 2001 vintage we have created a special Anniversary package to commemorate our ten years of cooperation and friendship. The 2001 vintage, praised by wine critics around the world, is an ideal wine to celebrate this event. The ripe Siegerrebe gives a penetrating bouquet of maracujo, mango and rosepetal, while Huxelrebe provides the fantastic fruit flavors. Rudolf's father was one of the first winemakers to plant these grapes in the 1950's when it was a "test hybrid." The Burg Rodenstein site is blessed with great exposure. NFS01 NFS01
